Abby Berkson

Adorable aesthetics. Classic craftsmanship.

My work is completely handcrafted from start to finish. All of my work is thrown and trimmed on the potter’s wheel with high standards of craftsmanship. Great care is given to the weight of the object, the feel of the handle, and the overall balance of form and function. Every piece is hand illustrated to create a one-of-a-kind object.

Bio

Abby Berkson lives and works in Easthampton, Massachusetts, offering hand thrown, functional ceramics. Her work is available online and at select craft shows in the northeastern US.

Background

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from Alfred University in 2003, Abby worked for Constance Talbot of High Hollow Pottery and taught pottery classes in Vermont and Massachusetts while developing her own aesthetic and body of work.

In 2008 she began selling her work at art and craft shows. In 2010, she formally launched Abby Berkson Ceramics as a full-time business and expanded her line of designs and ceramic forms.

Since then she has sold her work online and at dozens of craft fairs across the northeastern US, including alternative markets like SoWa Open Market in Boston, Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn, and Crafty Bastards in Washington DC, as well as traditional craft shows like Crafts at Lyndhurst (NY), Guilford Craft Expo (CT), and the Worcester Center for Crafts Holiday Festival (MA).

Abby’s work has appeared in Yankee Magazine, Apartment Therapy, and various other print and online publications.

Craftsmanship

All of Abby’s work is thrown and trimmed on the potter’s wheel with high standards of craftsmanship. Great care is given to the weight of the object, the feel of the handle, and the overall balance of form and function.

Abby’s wheel skills were honed as an assistant potter in production pottery studios, where she made countless pots to precise sizes and weights.

Abby loves creating everyday pots, the ones people reach for first when they open a kitchen cabinet. She offers mugs, cups, bowls, plates, planters, vases, and various serving objects like pitchers and spoon rests.

Aesthetic

Abby’s body of work is distinguished by combining charming surface design and expert craftsmanship. Every piece is hand illustrated to create a one-of-a-kind object. Working with crisp white stoneware, her pots have a minimalist aesthetic quality that is both simple and modern. Abby glazes her work with a vibrant color palette that provides fun pops of color.

Abby’s illustration style is inspired by her deep love of storybook illustration and the natural world.
